The lovely Haley at Carrots for Michaelmas shared her secrets for road trippin' with tiny kids- which is timely for us, as we just decided to skip the airport and drive straight to Gulf Shores, AL this Thanksgiving!

Kendra at Catholic All Year shared the secret to receiving communion while holding a child (a nursing infant, a struggling toddler, or the hand of a little goober)- receive on your tongue.  I figured that out rather quickly, I'm proud to say, and now it's a pretty natural way for me to receive communion, whether I'm struggling with a toddler or not.

And finally, check out this article on Ethika Politika about how the Duggars get this whole chastity thing completely wrong.  Scandals aside, I've never found it prudent for Catholics to turn to any reality tv star family as models of moral behavior, even if they seem wholesome and harmless on the surface.

Oh, Internet... {42}

So, as it turns out, Chief did catch the stomach bug.  However, her version involved puking twice, having diarrhea once, never running a fever, and being done with it in less than 24 hours.  Compare this to my three full days of dehydrating misery and yeah- I'm still calling this a win for breastfeeding.

Wedding Recaps: Paper Planes

As the reception wound down, I didn't notice that my sisters and other members of our wedding party snuck away to decorate my car.

Meanwhile, I went to change into my getaway dress, and supplies were distributed to the guests to help with the "closing ceremonies."

Some couples run to the honeymoon under a shower of birdseed; others dart through a crowd of sparklers.

We're geeks, remember?

We left through a salute of paper airplanes.

(Disclaimer: this was not an original idea.  At the beginning of our wedding planning adventure, I saw a wedding somewhere on the internet where the guests threw paper airplanes as the couple left the reception, but I didn't bookmark the link!  So while I can't claim credit for the idea, our guests sure thought it was creative.)

And then we came running out to the car!  We told everyone the idea was to toss the airplanes over us, but of course some jokesters threw them at us...

 

 

 

 

Funny story- we were almost out of town when my phone rang- it was my dad.  Oh, great, last minute words of advice?  Or maybe he was going to ask us to come to the after party at my parents' house instead of making the drive to our halfway point in Georgia?

"I've got something here you might want," he said.

"Uh oh, what did we forget?" I asked, making a mental checklist of things we needed for the honeymoon.  I had loaded the car that morning in the flurry of getting ready, so of course I had forgotten something.

"Your camera!"

Yikes!  For some reason, I brought our camera into the reception, thinking I'd take my own pictures, or something.  Ha.  So I turned around and headed back to Spring House, where people were getting ready to leave and change into more comfortable clothes for the after party.  We said our goodbyes again with some quick hugs and kisses, then hopped in the car for a second grand exit.

Making a (Stylish) Getaway, Part 3

Previously, on Our Geeky Adventure:

-Limos are a little...high school prom- to me, anyway
-So we'll be driving to Disney in my car!
-And I need a short white dress for this getaway

So I know I said no limos...but if there were some way to hire Alfred as chauffeur, I think we'd be okay with riding in the Batmobile to Disney :)

This was taken in the parking lot of a Lowe's in Chantilly.  Somebody took an old limo and added on some pieces to the body to make it look like the Batmobile.  When he went into the store to go shopping, we (and a bunch of other people) used the opportunity to snap a bunch of pictures.  Before anyone had a chance to talk to him about this project, however, he had already hopped back in and driven away in a huff.  Apparently he didn't understand the bystanders' fascination.

Anyway.

I found a getaway dress!  I was at Kohl's the other day snapping up some pieces for a business trip when I found this hanging on a sale rack:

 These are elbow-length sleeves as opposed to long sleeves but gah this dress was just calling to me!  And it's more of a cream than a white but hey- so is my wedding gown.

I can already think of about a million ways to wear this dress and I really want to wear it now...but I'm going to force myself to wait until the big day.

Making a (Stylish) Getaway

Somehow, when we started planning this thing, I knew I didn't want to rent a limo for our wedding day transportation.  Yes, it would be super convenient to get the wedding party from the church to the reception site and would ensure that nobody lollygagged, but, aside from being an unnecessary expense (or at least a low-on-the-priorities-list expense), limos...well, they remind me of prom.

Not that prom is a bad thing to be reminded of, it's just not the sort of association I'd like to make on The Big Day.

But there are other options for schmancy transportation!

Horse-drawn carriages are super romantic.  However, while I'm sure there are no shortage of horses in Alex City, finding a ride like this one would be much more difficult.  Plus, there's no way we'd fit the whole bridal party in this thing, which kind of defeats the purpose.  (Well, our purpose, anyway.)

I love love LOVE the school bus trend, and I honestly considered this for a while.  However, I don't know how easy it is to acquire an old school bus, or to rent one from a school district during the fall, and again- transportation for the bridal party isn't much of a priority, budget-wise, so in the end, we passed this one up.  Besides, it's not on theme.  (That's how I convinced myself to stop lusting over pictures like this.)

So it looks like the bridal party will be carpooling in vehicles belonging to significant others, my parents, and/or my sisters.

And us?

Well, you already know that we'll be driving ourselves from the wedding to the honeymoon and then back home.  But guess whose car we're driving...

Suzi is about a year and a half old now and has quite a bit of miles on her, but she's younger than Mr. Geek's car, Holly, who has seen juuuuuust a few more miles.

Does this mean I'll be the one driving us away from the reception...most likely, yes :D  Brides are totally allowed to drive the getaway car!  (I just hope the groomsmen keep the decorations tasteful.)
