Highlights from the Geek Family Disney Trip 2017

As you may remember, we went to Disney in November to celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary.  I realize it's now halfway through March, but I figured I should share with you how that trip went!

Rather than write a minute-to-minute journal of events, I decided to just fill up a post of all of my favorite pictures from the trip- most of which came from Disney's PhotoPass photographers (yes, we purchased Memory Maker.  Yes, it was worth it!)  So here are some highlights from the best family vacation we've ever taken:

Phew, that's a lot of pictures!  Check back later and I'll tell you about our favorite character meets, how our trip with kids was different from our trip without, and I'll let you know where you can find some of the sweet shirts (and ears!) we sported on this trip.

When's the last time you went to Disney?  When's your next trip planned?

Currently, Peanut is... {6 months]

Okay so technically Peanut is currently SEVEN months old, because, again, #secondchildproblems - Mommy just doesn't have time to blog anymore!  But let's pretend it's a month ago and see what Peanut was doing then ;)

Growing a bit slower now; he's been able to wear the same size clothes for almost three whole months now!  He's still as healthy and strong as he's always been, and I do think we're about to enter a growth spurt any moment now, but for now it's nice to know that we'll actually finish the current box of diapers before moving on to the next size.

Eating all. the. time.  Back at the six month mark, he was still waking up at least once every night to eat more because he's just never satisfied.  Around that time, I had a terrible stomach bug, and my supply absolutely tanked- I went through what was left of my freezer supply.  I've been pulling out all the stops ever since to try and get my production back up again- including picking up some Milkies lactation cookies and eating two servings a day.  Between all the supplements and an extra pump session after Peanut goes to bed every night, I've gotten back to the point where I'm at least one bottle ahead of where I need to be the next day- but I'll probably never have that freezer stash back.  Still, I'm managing to give him what he needs, and the past few weeks he's gone back to sleeping through the night in his own bed.  He also started solids right when he turned six months old- although at first, he was skeptical of the whole food thing.

Talking as much as his sister, pretty much!  What I find so incredible is that he and his sister seem to have their own language, even though they're almost four years apart.  You see, when he "talks" to us, his voice is a little deeper, and he seems to be imitating our words, like "Da Da Da" and "Ma Ma Ma."  But Chief will squeal at him and sing in a high pitch, so when he "talks" to her, he squeals right back and sings like a little bird.  It's so funny to listen to them coo at each other (and they think it's funny, too- she'll crack up when he starts to squeal, and then he'll chuckle when he hears her giggle).

Making facial expressions that look just like his Daddy- he's just so handsome!

Listening to everything we say- he stares so intently at whomever is talking, you can tell he's really paying attention.  He loves it when we say prayers together- the rhythm and cadence in our voices sounds a bit like a song, and he smiles to encourage us to keep going.  Mostly he listens to his sister- and talks to her, too.

Sleeping when he wants to.  The poor guy just doesn't nap at daycare- he only naps if somebody is holding him, and they can't cuddle him for hours the way we can at home on weekends.  Like I said, at the actual six month point, he was waking up in the middle of the night, but for the past month he's been tired (and comfortable) enough to sleep all night.  He sleeps on his belly now, and I typically lay him on his side for him to immediately roll over- if he has to work too hard, he'll wake himself up and will need to be held some more.

Loving his sister, more than anything in the world; hugs and cuddles; the sound of lips smacking in a kiss; letting someone play with his hair; the toy tiger his sister got for Christmas; throwing things on the floor for grown ups to retrieve; knocking over block towers; the stuffed Mickey Mouse his sister gave him for Christmas; chewing on anything he can manage to get in his mouth.

Hating being moved once he's fallen asleep somewhere; having his diaper changed when he'd really rather be eating; saying goodbye to his sister in the morning; getting buckled into his car seat.

Hopefully in a couple of months I'll post the nine month update on time.  Our life is just twice as busy now!

Currently, Chief is... {4 years}

It just so happens that Miss Chief was born precisely on our first anniversary, so it's just a coincidence that we're currently at Walt Disney World as she turns four years old.  We're really here to celebrate our fifth anniversary and re-live our honeymoon- albeit a slightly different feel than our honeymoon, what with two kids in tow.  But oh my goodness, she is, in fact, four years old now.  It's like I blinked and a whole year passed by.  Let's see how she's grown over that year.

making this whole big sister thing official in December
Growing taaaaaaaaall!  She's got her some long, skinny legs and has pretty much lost all her baby fat, so if you're not paying attention, you could mistake her for a teenager- especially when she's being sassy ;)  She's pretty solidly in a size 5 now, and we shop in the kids section where she's an XS.  Size 4 t-shirts still fit so her closet is full of tops; she could probably go a whole month without wearing the same shirt more than once.

saving babies at the March for Life
Eating much more sophisticated flavors than I was as a four-year-old.  Living in this area, we have an incredible variety of restaurants to choose from, and she's got a "usual" dish for every cuisine- Indian, Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Japanese, Greek...

enjoying a snow day
Talking with quite the mature vocabulary.  She learns a new word at school probably once a week and is good about incorporating it into conversations as often as she can.  They also teach a light smattering of Spanish at her daycare, so she can count to ten and tell you the words for all the colors.  Lately, she starts almost all of her sentences with "Hey, you know-" and then she'll share a little a little anecdote about her day or a fact she learned in school or give her spin on a joke from one of her TV shows.  She has a hard time waiting her turn in a conversation- especially if Mr Geek and I are talking about something among ourselves, she'll interrupt with whatever thought popped into her head, so we're trying to help her work on that.  I do love the long, thoughtful conversations we have on the drive home if I pick her and her brother up from daycare- when she's slightly tired, she's really rather insightful.

preschool glamour shots, because imagining her as a 13-year-old is what I need right now
Making facial expressions that are all her own.  She's got her daddy's sense of humor and her mommy's bossy streak, but her little grumpy face or her "y'all are so not cool" side-eye are completely hers.

letting out her inner diva at her first dance recital
Listening to songs from her favorite Disney movies- especially Moana, which I think she can recite in its entirety.  She's also sort of obsessed with the show The Lion Guard and loves listening to the theme song, since they use it for warm up in her dance class.  She'll sing to her baby brother if he's upset- normally either the ABC's or Twinkle, Twinkle, but sometimes she makes up her own silly song and he'll stop crying and watch her dance around like a fool.

falling in love with her baby brother
Sleeping so much better than she was a year ago.  She'll even take the occasional nap at daycare!  (Never at home.  Naps are for quitters.)  She loves that we get to include her baby brother in bedtime prayers, and extra hugs and kisses with him is really the only thing she does to procrastinate going to sleep.  This summer, we upgraded to a king sized bed, and handed down our queen mattress to her.  About a month ago, she was having mild nightmares, and we'd wake up to find her snuggled in between us.  But mostly, she like to take advantage of having her own large bed- large enough for Mommy or Daddy to sit with her even after prayers have been said.  We really have no excuse for not staying and cuddling, so most nights, someone does, until she falls asleep.  She can make even the biggest bed feel small, though- by sleeping entirely horizontal, and filling every spare square inch with stuffed animals.

getting ready to go to the theater
Loving her baby brother, much more than she ever thought she would; the responsibilities of being a big sister; picking out her own outfits; pretty much the entire Nick Jr lineup; finding her sight words on signs and menus and in books; sounding out words to figure out how to spell them; her red tricycle; ballet class; collecting stickers; trying out the filters on Instagram stories.

Hating when Mommy and Daddy are at work and we can't all be together; the suggestion that maybe it might be time for bed, even thought the actual bedtime routine isn't all that bad; not being able to choose her own outfit; pretty much any activity that requires sitting still and/or being quiet; having mealtime conversation cut off so that she can, you know, eat.

Where has the time gone?

Five

Wood is the traditional gift for the fifth wedding anniversary; silverware is the modern gift.

Bringing your kids along on a second honeymoon is the Geek fifth anniversary gift.

on our honeymoon, five years ago
I've been thinking a lot about the phrase "made for each other" lately.  It's always been easy to see how we complement each other- his goofiness alleviates my seriousness, my fashion sense compensates for his inability to coordinate colors, my love of cooking pairs perfectly with his love of eating- but ever sense our little boy arrived, I've been reflecting on how we're not just compatible, we're perfect for each other.  Specifically, he's perfect for me.

We're both walking in a sleep-deprived haze lately, and I thought maybe I'm just not coping as well as he is, but I realized the other day that he's just powering through, putting on a happy face, and purposefully choosing patience- patience with the kids, patience with life's little annoyances, and patience with me.  Something will happen which will annoy the heck out of me, and I'll start chewing over a fight that I'm sure will happen, when he totally surprises me with a joke or a sweet gesture.  He can completely disarm me, and I'll swallow the witty argument I was about to make, saving us from what would have otherwise been an unpleasant evening.

That sleep deprivation is making it difficult to be particularly eloquent right now.  I can't properly describe how he is exactly what I need, so you'll just have to trust me.

These have been the best five years of my life; the next five are shaping up to be even more exciting.

Let's go have a Mickey ice cream bar!

Much love,
The Geeks

Currently, Peanut is...{3 months}

Well, Peanut turned three months old almost a whole week ago, and I'm just now finding time to write this post.  #secondchildproblems I had intended to write this Monday night after both kids were asleep, but it turns out SOMEBODY decided that sleep is for the weak and the past several nights, there hasn't really been an "after both kids are asleep".  But I finally have time to sit down to a computer, so let me get you up to speed on how the little guy is doing!

1 week old, at his baptism
Growing so fast, but that kind of slowed down the past few weeks.  By the time he had his two month check-up, he'd sized up to 3-6 month clothes.  That check-up had him weighing in at 14lbs 3oz and I can only imagine he's several pounds heavier now.  The past week, he's had trouble sleeping and has been doing a lot of cluster feeding, so I think I feel a growth spurt coming on... With Chief, we were always weighing in right at average- she wore size 3-6 month clothes from the time she was 3 months until the time she was 6 months- and I felt a constant pressure to put weight on her.  I struggled with my milk supply from the moment I headed back to work, and lived in constant fear that it wouldn't be enough and I wouldn't be able to keep her healthy.  This little dude has been huge since birth- which also had me worried about my supply, because I thought that surely I wouldn't live up to his voracious appetite.  The human body is a rather awe-inspiring thing, however, and just like the lactation consultants say, supply follows demand- since little dude ate almost non-stop in the beginning, the milk kept flowing and he kept growing.

Eating exclusively breast milk which, like I said, has been such a relief.  In the beginning he had a terrible latch- I just could not convince him to open his mouth any wider, even though I tried every technique in the (literal) book.  I just grimaced through the painful feedings- made even worse by the fact that when he would fall asleep, his mouth would clamp shut rather than go slack- and he got bigger and bigger and eventually that little mouth grew big enough to not be painful even though he still doesn't open it all the way.  I started pumping at random times when he hit one month old and built up the beginnings of a freezer supply.  I went back to work when he turned 9 weeks, instead of 12 weeks like his sister, but I had enough of a stash already built up.  With Chief, my pumping experience was a disaster from pretty much the very beginning, and I went to work with only enough milk for that first day, only producing enough each day to send to day care the next.  Peanut's appetite has kept my supply way up, and most days I actually produce more than I need to send the next day.  I drink a cup of Mother's Milk tea every morning and take fenugreek every night and while I have no idea if it's actually helping, I'd like to think that it is.  We caught The Daycare Cold, also known as The Black Plague, and for my own sanity I needed to take some sinus medicine, which affected my supply slightly, but I've stopped taking the medicine and things are trending upward again.  God willing, we'll make it 18 months like I did with Chief!

Talking pretty much in complete sentences- at least he thinks he is.  He'll be real quiet and observant, listening to what his goofy sister has to say, and then, when there's a break in the conversation, he'll launch into a long soliloquy, gesticulating with his hands and emphasizing his "words" with raised eyebrows.  At daycare, they told me that he'll lie on a mat and "talk" to a teacher while they hold another baby, perfectly content to not necessarily be the center of attention, but if that teacher walks away before he's done talking, he'll get upset- as if he's offended that they're cutting off the conversation.  I had worried that Chief would talk enough for the both of them, and that he'd be quiet- they say boys take longer to talk than girls do- but if he keeps this up, he'll be just as gabby as his sister.  I love listening to what he has to say!

Making facial expressions that just about crack me up!  We practically fall over ourselves to try and get him to laugh, but most of the time he just sort of raises his eyebrows as if to say "y'all are so weird."  He is a little flirt- he will make eye contact with you (especially if you're a pretty girl) and then smile real big, which of course makes you smile, and he'll bring his hand to his mouth and turn his head...the boy's gonna break some hearts.  He looks just like his daddy, but every now and then he gets this twinkle in his eye that reminds me of my Papaw, and it catches me off guard.  My Papaw would have loved this little boy; I wish he could have met him.

Listening to his big sister make goofy noises and sing silly songs to make him smile.  For whatever reason, she seems to think that he likes it when she moos at him, like a cow- so if he starts to fuss, she'll launch into a loud "MOOOO!  MOOOOOOOOO!" in the hopes that it will cheer him up.  I've found that I don't sing to him as often as I did to Chief, and at first I felt bad about that, but then I realized that she sings to him plenty often.  She'll sing sweet songs to him like Twinkle Twinkle, or sometimes, if she's desperate to cheer him up, she'll resort to the Paw Patrol theme song.  He loves to watch her and he just lights up when she starts talking to him.  (In his one month and two month pictures, he's looking at her instead of me.)  I love their relationship and I hope they're always this close.

Sleeping rather well, all things considered.  Chief started sleeping through the night at around 6 weeks or so and almost never woke up in the middle of the night.  Peanut...not so much.  Ever since he started daycare he's been sleeping more soundly- mostly because he doesn't nap very well at school.  But honestly, even when he does wake up in the middle of the night or has problems falling asleep...that's actually normal!  We got lucky with Chief, and so we have to constantly remind ourselves that Peanut isn't...defective, he's a normal baby.  She wasn't so normal.  (She's still not so normal, but that's another story.)

Loving his sister, more than anyone else in the world (well, except maybe me- but only because I feed him); his tasty little fist; his little bouncy chair (that he inherited from his sister); tickles; having his hair washed or brushed; long, deep conversations; and yes, he loves when his sister moos at him like a cow.

Hating getting in the bath; getting out of the bath; having the snot sucked out of his nose; having lotion applied to his face; being moved after he falls asleep; having to wait to eat once he decides he's hungry.

And that's the past three months!  How has your little one been lately?

Much love,
The Geeks

The Best Time of the Year

That's right folks- it's time to start talking about Halloween costumes!

If you've been following the blog for a while, you probably know by now that Halloween is my favorite holiday because I love dressing up in costume.  Now that I have my own little family, putting together family costumes is the thing I look forward to most every year.  I'm no master sewist, but I can certainly up-cycle some simple pieces to pull together a pretty adorable group look.  Here's a recap of some of our past family costumes:

Probably my favorite costumes of all time- Han, Leia, and a little ewok!

Treebeard and his two hobbit friends were certainly a hit at the Renaissance Faire.

Our single best trick-or-treating experience definitely happened when we wore our 101 Dalmatians costumes.

Although someone didn't want to pose for pictures, we looked awful cute at the Renaissance Faire last year dressed as Cinderella and two of her mice friends.

Last Halloween wasn't really a group costume, but our little Abby Cadaby sure looked adorable!

I just got started on this year's group costumes and cannot wait to show you the finished product!

What are you dressing as for Halloween?

Much love,
The Geeks
